Overwhelmed by Social Media: Fear of Being Left Behind

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Megan and I gave a presentation on social media for local businesses last Thursday.  The presentation was intended as an overview of social networking so that small business owners could get an idea of what social media is and how similar businesses have been using social networking to grow.

Part way through the presentation I had to throw away my outline when it became clear that my audience knew less that I expected.  Despite the innumerable articles on Twitter and Facebook in recent months, few of the participants had familiarity with social networking.  Even those people who had tried Facebook or Twitter hadn’t done much with them and weren’t very familiar with their features.

I pride myself on my ability to explain technical issues to non-technical people, but clearly I had underestimated the gap.  I promised the participants that I would get my presentation online, but I’ve decided to revise it a bit so that it addresses the gap.

Over the next several weeks I plan to publish some basic articles about different social networking sites.  I don’t believe every business needs to be or should be using social media.  But business owners need to know enough to make an informed choice.

Do I Really Need to Twitter? How to Use Social Media to Grow Your Business

June 4 Presentation Will Teach Small Business Owners How to Use Social Media to Grow Their Businesses

The business news has been full of stories about companies allocating a larger portion of their marketing budget to social media. Small business owners have been left wondering whether they need to join the social media bandwagon or risk being left behind.

* Are Twitter and other social media just a fad or have they become an essential part of business marketing?
* How can MY business benefit from social media and can the benefits justify the cost in both time and money?
* Are my current customers and potential clients using social media and how do I find them?
* Why would anybody want to use Twitter anyway?

These are some of the question that business coach Megan Oltman and web consultant Daniel Porcher will address on June 4 at a presentation called “Do I Really Need to Twitter? How to Use Social Media to Grow Your Business.”

Learn about the different types of social media and how other small businesses have used them to grow their businesses. Just because social media is hot does not automatically mean that it is the right strategy for every small business.

Live Seminar on Thursday, June 4, 6 PM

Hello World

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

As a web developer, I am immediately drawn to customizing this site to within an inch of  its life.  As a business person, I can’t wait that long.  So the web developer will have to settle for incremental updates so I can get on with the business of writing a blog.

Art Radtke has had more influence on my approach to business than any other single person.  If you have not been a client of Team Nimbus or a member of Business Networking Int’l in eastern Virginia and North Carolina, chances are you have not met Art, but if you’re a fan of xkcd you’ve seen his son’s technical prowess at work.

I mention Art because one of his favorite maxims is “implement now, perfect later.”   Unlike large businesses, small businesses have the freedom to try different things and to keep adjusting until they get it right. More importantly, small businesses need to act with urgency to thrive.  So it is in that spirit of urgency and experimentation that I launch this blog, with the most basic of WordPress templates.

This name of this blog stems from its focus on social networking for small businesses and non-profits and, in particular, my belief that focusing on relationships and providing value are key to finding value in social networks.

This blog will also examine the use of open software platforms and ecommerce solutions for small businesses and anything else I think that can help small business and non-profits to thrive.
